Doraville Declares a State of Emergency and Takes Steps to Protect Public Health

Tonight (March 18th), the Doraville City Council held a first read of an emergency ordinance (related to the Covid-19 Pandemic) that would do the following within the city of Doraville

  • Require take-out only at restaurants/bars (no dining in)
  • Close all massage, nail salon, and fitness club operations
  • Close all large event spaces

At the end of the discussion, I used my powers as mayor to declare a state of emergency, and to instruct the city staff to immediately begin planning how they are going to notify affected business owners ahead of the deadline.

A special meeting has been called for tomorrow (Thursday, March 19th) at 8:30pm. If council approves the ordinance, it will go into effect on March 21st.

The consideration of this ordinance is not something any of the council members take lightly. I personally am very concerned about the impact these emergency measures will have on many small Doraville businesses and their employees. Public health and safety, however, must be our city’s top concern. You can read the full text of the ordinance here.

Actions like Doraville’s will only work if other government entities take similar steps. We hope our consideration of this measure sends a clear signal to other cities, counties and the state that the time for action is now.
