City Council Appoints Interim City Manager

Since Regina Gates announced she was retiring as Doraville’s city manager at the end of this year, I have been very concerned about the city finding someone who would act as an interim city manager after she steps down.

I’m pleased that last night, in their final meeting of the year, the mayor and council selected Chuck Atkinson (who has been on our police force since 1994, and has been acting as interim police chief since the Summer) as the city’s interim city manager. Mayor Pittman and I spoke earlier this week, and both agree that this is a good appointment.

Chief Atkinson is exceptionally qualified for this role. Not only has he served the city for the last 25 years, but he also has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University and manages the largest department in the city. While in the role, he will be paid only one salary – that of an entry level city manager.

Being in a position to have to hire an interim city manager is never ideal, but I think that Chief Atkinson’s education and experience with the city will serve us well as we look for our next city manager.

Please join me in congratulating Chief Atkinson!
